Thank you to everyone who reached out and requested a copy of the sample letter asking our representatives to co-sponsor the Momnibus Bill. I’ve shared it below, so you can copy and paste to a Word document or to your Notes function on your smart phone. Just fill in the spaces, add any relevant personal info and send it off!
Also, I wanted to share a few links with those of you who might be interested in learning more about the black maternal health crisis and how we can begin to take steps forward to repair this broken system.
Summary of the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act
[ Date, Name & Address ]
The Honorable (First and Last Name),
As a constituent, motherhood advocate and mom of two, I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor The Black Maternal Health Momnibus (H.R.6142). This legislation would provide the urgent support needed to address consequential inequities in our maternal healthcare system and reduce the rate of maternal mortality in the U.S.
In the last 25 years, maternal mortality rates dropped 44% around the world, but increased in the U.S. by 16.7%. Moreover, of developed nations, the U.S. ranks 32 of 35 in infant mortality. These numbers are unacceptable, and worse, they are largely preventable (nearly 60%). Most urgently, these numbers are driven by our country’s black maternal health crisis. (Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from complications due to pregnancy/ childbirth, while black infants are two times more likely to die than white infants).
I urge you to become a co-sponsor and demonstrate your commitment to the lives and health of our nation’s moms, all of whom deserve a chance to bring their babies into the world safely. Please let me know if you or your staff would like any additional information on this important act. I look forward hearing from you soon.
